Macaoimh Camp 2006

Over 150 macaoimh and leaders participated in this years Macaoimh Camp held in Kilcully Campsite from 23rd to 25th June which had a Pirate theme.

The fun began on Friday with a treasure hunt, which was won by Kinsale who found almost twice as many coloured sticks as anyone else. This was followed by each group making their own pirate flags, then making swords, learning how to float a plasticine boat as well as practicing the pirate song.

Saturday was very busy, starting early with a bus trip to Cobh to do a photo treasure hunt followed by a boat tour around Cork Harbour including a close-up look at some of the Navy Ships in Haulbowline and an even closer look at the Pont Avon Brittany Ferry we passed it!

But there was no rest for these pirates as we had to board the bus for Fota and after a quick lunch we had a guided tour of the park looking behind the scenes and finding out about how dangerous some animal are and how they care for them when they are sick.  We also looked at woodland ecology and captured many insects!!  After the tour we had some free time to look for our favorite animals – with the monkeys and kangaroos being very popular.  Then it was back to the bus and on to meet Fr James McSweeney in St Oliver’s Church for Mass- which was unusual because they had a gospel choir which was very good. (There was a lot of clapping involved!)  Finally we headed back to Kilcully.

Sunday was lovely a sunny and the morning was taking up with some great bases, include a capturing the pirate flags we had made on Friday and a Flour Bomb game, Walking the Plank, Frisbee Golf, Exploding Powder Kegs, a Bounding Castle and really cool inflatable Slide.  After a busy morning, it was time for lunch and for the tents to come down.

Before leaving each section were presented with certificates for completing the Naturalist Merit Badge.  Many more have now also completed their Camper Merit Badge.
